Preservation Policy
The preservation copy and the convenient web copy serve different purposes. Original files should remain byte-for-byte unchanged; modern derivatives should be clearly identified.
Preservation principles
- Retain the original filename, extension, timestamps where known, and source context.
- Record a SHA-256 checksum for every preservation master.
- Store provenance: donor/source, original URL, capture date, Wayback URL and any known creator credit.
- Generate thumbnails and playable transcodes into a separate derivatives directory.
- Never replace an original JPEG, GIF, FLV, SWF or video file merely because a newer format is easier to serve.
Access formats
| Material | Recommended access derivative |
|---|---|
| Still-image thumbnail | AVIF and WebP with the original JPEG/PNG/GIF fallback. |
| Video | WebM plus MP4 fallback; retain the original master separately. |
| Flash | Preserve SWF/FLA files; add screenshots, metadata and an emulated access option where lawful and practical. |
| Documents | Original file plus extracted text or accessible PDF derivative where needed. |
Minimum item metadata
Title, creator, date, category, original filename, media type, dimensions/duration, byte size, SHA-256, source URL, capture date, rights note, preservation status and known relationships to other items.
